Cannon County didn’t suffer from post-Thanksgiving layoff as the Lionettes feasted on Greater Gwinnett (Ga.), 85-28, in the Mitch Wilson State Farm / Huff & Puff Trucking Thanksgiving Classic at Cannon County High School Friday (Nov. 25).
Lindsey Reed scored 19 points, collected eight steals, dished out seven assists, pulled four rebounds and had no turnovers in less than one half of action. Sophomore Abbey Sissom continued her strong start with 18 points, two assists and three rebounds. Senior Joanna Young added 11 points and four steals as Cannon County improved to 4-0.
“With the girls working the Classic throughout the game you worry about them coming out and being lackidasical, but they were not,” Cannon County Head Coach Michael Dodgen said. “Intensity-wise, defensive-wise, I feel like we continue to get better each game.”
Madison Walkup, Madison Simons and Pauliani Tawara scored six each, and Jordan Hollis finished with five as numerous Lionettes contributed to the most recent win. The outcome was never in doubt.
The Lionettes stormed to a 33-8 lead in the first quarter and stretched that margin to 45-15 by halftime.
Dodgen primarly employed the services of his reserves for most of the second quarter and all but three minutes of the second half. Those players demonstrated the squad’s quality depth by not only protecting the lead, but building upon it.
“I was really proud of all of the girls in this game,” Dodgen said. “We kind of let up a little in the second quarter but that can happen in games like these. I was pleased that we maintained our focus for the most part and that we were able to get several players some valuabale experience in a game situation.”
Cannon County held the Lady Barons to 13 points in the second half and won the battle of the boards by a signficant margin on its way to the fourth-straight win.
