SPARTA – Don’t accuse the No. 2-ranked Cannon County Lionettes of taking advantage of charity.

The Lionettes could have made things much easier for themselves to reach the state tournament for the third time in four years as a win in the Region 4-AA title game would have assured a sectional home date against an inferior foe.

But Cannon County (32-4), which is generally an outstanding free-throw shooting team, was an uncharacteristic 13-of-27 from the free-throw line, including 8-of-16 in the final quarter, on their way to a disappointing 57-54 setback against the Lady Wildcats (24-11) in the Region 4-AA title game.

For the second straight year, Cannon County’s road to the TSSAA Class AA Girls State Tournament will take place, well, on the road.

The Lionettes will face Sequoyah County (22-8) at 6 p.m., Saturday for the right to advance into the TSSAA Class AA State Tournament. Cannon County went on the road to defeat powerful McMinn County last year.

“Our team will be ready,” Lionettes Head Coach Michael Dodgen said. “We are not pushing the panic button here. We will be fine.”

Abbey Sissom and Madison Walkup led the Lionettes with 16 points each in the Livingston Academy game. Both players were members of the 10-person Region 4-AA All-Tournament team. They were joined by teammates Autumn King and Erin McReynolds, a sophomore and junior, respectively.

Cannon County carried a 29-23 lead into the half; however, Livingston Academy used a strong third quarter to pull ahead 44-40 and set the stage for a back-and-forth final quarter between the District 8-AA powerhouses.
