MURFREESBORO - The Lionettes primary goal heading into Friday's opening District 8-AA game at Central Magnet was to contain seniors Claudia Smith and Ola Obi.
With the help of 14 points from Sophie Fielder, Obi tallied 15 points on 7-of-10 shooting to lead the unbeaten Tigers to a 52-46 district win.
It's the first loss for the Lionettes (6-1, 0-1) this year.
"I knew going in we were taking some chances by trying to sell out and try to contain Claudia Smith and (Ola) Obi. There are two really good players, two of the better players in the district," Cannon County head coach Michael Dodgen said.
"It didn't work out for us."
Fielder, who scored nine of the 12 Tiger points in the first quarter, cashed in on 4-of-7 shooting beyond the arc. The Tigers shot 10-of-19 overall from three-point range.
Despite trailing 12-5 to start the second quarter, the Lionettes ended the half on an 8-3 run to cut the Tiger lead down to two at halftime.
With Central Magnet up 17-15 in the third quarter, the Tigers worked the ball to Obi and Smith, scoring seven and nine points respectively, accounting for 16 of the 18 Tiger points in the third quarter.
"She is strong and she clears a lot of place," Dodgen said of Obi. "We got to do a better job away from the basketball keeping her from getting the open angles."
The Lionettes trailed the entire first half until gaining the 18-17 lead after a Kristen Hale 3-pointer in the third quarter.
Kendra Maynard led Cannon County with 15 points and Erin McReynolds added 14 points.

Stingy defense only gives up eight baskets
Cannon County girls defeated Coffee County 55-31 Saturday night holding the Red Raiders to 16 percent shooting at Cannon County.
Kelli Davis and Autumn King led the Lionettes with 12 points respectively. Kristen Hale scored nine points and Kendra Maynard added seven.
Hale scored six of her nine points in the first quarter after knocking down two shots from beyond the arc. She shot 3-of-8 from 3-point range on the game.
In addition to scoring 55 points, the Lionettes defense only allowed eight field goals from the Red Raiders.
Back on Nov. 21, Cannon County girls defeated Coffee County 66-53.
