LAFAYETTE- A balanced Cannon County offense led to a 24-point scoring spree in the third quarter to propel the Lionettes over the Tigers 70-44 in Macon County Tuesday.

Up 37-32 early in the third period, Kendra Maynard hit back-to-back 3s from the right wing, her most "comfortable spot" to shoot from, as the Lionettes went on a 19-3 run.

"I was proud of the way the kids responded. We knocked down some shots, especially there in the third quarter," head coach Michael Dodgen said.

"They went to a triangle-and-two to try and stop Kelli (Davis) and Kristen (Hale), and Kendra Maynard knocked down some big shots there."

Maynard led all Lionettes (8-1, 1-1) with 17 points. Kelli Davis scored 16 points after shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line in the second quarter. Kristen Hale also added 10.

"I just felt like I wasn't hitting outside shots, so I just tried to drive and get to the rim, and then they were fouling so I had to knock down free throws," Kelli Davis said.

"To come on the road and do what we did from the free throw line was good for us," Dodgen said.
Hale scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter as the Lionettes led by as much as 13 following a Hale trey in the closing minute.

Trailing 5-0 in the opening minutes of the first period, the Lionettes gained their first lead at 6-5 after a pair of Hale free throws and never gave the lead back.

Cannon County's largest lead came with 3:03 remaining the fourth after Haylee Mooneyham converted two free throws to push the lead to 66-40.

Although trailing by nine after the first stanza, the Lions cut the lead to two points going into the half down 35-33.

But Smith County's Callie Hackett scored 21 of her 32 points in the second half and it proved to be just enough for the Owls' edge over the Lions.
