Letter: Help resolve family tree

Staff

To the Editor

Thanks to the readers of the Cannon Courier, my previous request for information resulted in the Elkins-Dillard family line being verified for DAR and discovery of four “cousins.”

Present research centers on Alexander Higgins who gave a one-acre tract of land to school commissioners, (1843) for a school house on Sugar Tree Knob.

I am seeking proof that Sarah Higgins was a daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth Higgins. Sarah married Jesse (Doc) Melton. They were parents of 11 children including Eliza Jane who married Charles Shirley (my ancestors), and John, the father of Will Jarrett Melton.

In 1867, Alexander Higgins sold land to Sarah’s sons, Dillard and Higdon Melton and gave the land on which he lived to grandchildren Edwin Perry, Amanda Perry and Martha Emaline Perry Sissom, for love and affection, retaining a lifetime right to live there.

I hope a descendant can help me prove that Sarah Higgins Melton was a daughter of Alexander Higgins!
I will reimburse for postage, copies, telephone calls, etc. and will gladly share the results of my research.
