The Lady Lions soccer team traveled to Cookeville Monday night to play in the first round of their district tournament. As Yogi Berra so famously put it, “it was déjà vu’ all over again.”

Just like last year’s opening round loss, which went into double overtime and a shootout, Monday night’s game saw the Lady Lions face double overtime and a shootout in their 4-3 loss to Smith County.

In the first half, Cannon went ahead 1-0 on a goal by Emilee Lance (with an assist by Kenzie Patterson). The Lady Lions played one of their better defensive games holding Smith County scoreless through the first 30 minutes of play.

The second half saw both teams play well defensively, but Cannon was able to go ahead 2-1 on a goal by Patterson. With under 2:00 to play in the game, Smith County was awarded a free kick.

Sara Bowman, who had played an excellent game-in-net with 16 saves, was unable to keep the kick out of the net which tied the score at 2-2.

After regulation, the teams played a 20-minute overtime with neither team able to score. The next overtime lasted for 10-minutes and again, neither team scored a goal.

This led to a shootout where each team alternated taking a shot-on-goal. Kenzie Patterson scored the only goal for the Lady Lions as they lost the shootout, 2-1.

Soccer All-District

Three players from the Lady Lions soccer team were honored with being named to the All-District team. Emilee Lance was selected First Team All-District, and Sara Bowman and Nina Walkup were selected Second Team All-District.
