LAFAYETTE - Lack of depth continued to plague Cannon County in a 38-6 road setback at Macon County Friday (Oct. 4).

The Lions (1-5, 0-2) put together a competitive opening half for the fourth straight week before the game got away in the second half.

“We put together some good drives but we didn’t finish,” Cannon County Head Coach T.J. Daniel said. “We continue to improve and you hope it pays off with a win. It didn’t work out that way (tonight) but I’m proud of the effort.”

Macon County scored on its second possession, driving 54 yards in 2:01 and capping the drive with a 16-yard run by Dalton Driver with 4:37 remaining to put the hosts up 7-0.

The score remained 7-0 until a Lions turnover in the final two minutes of the half gave Macon County (2-4, 1-1) possession at the Lion 9. They scored two plays later to go on top 14-0.

“We had done a good job of protecting the football but that was a bad time for one going into the half,” Daniel said.

It would be one of four turnovers in the game for Cannon County.

Macon County would stretch its lead to 31-0 before Cannon County finally got on the board.

Daniel went to freshman quarterback Josh Walkup in the second half after A.J. Daniel played the first half under center.

Walkup connected with Anton Knox for Cannon County’s only touchdown in the with 2:57 remaining. It was the first career touchdown for both Walkup and Knox, also a freshman.

Walkup connected with Daniel, brother Jake Walkup, Wilder Mankin and Knox for completions during the second half.

Cannon County will turn its attention to Livingston Academy for homecoming festivities Friday at Schwartz Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
