Some key Cannon County offices are up for grabs Thursday, August 4 in the county general election.

It will be a long day for election volunteers with the polls opening at 7 a.m. and closing at 7 p.m. A list of the polling places is included at the end of this article.

Only a few county offices are up for election in what is considered a federal and state primary.

The most contested race is for Assessor of Property. Four candidates are seeking this post, which is being vacated by Donald Preston. They include John U. Basinger, Anna Pittman, Angie Schwartz and Michael R. Underhill.

Another contested office is School Board District one with newcomer Michael Keith Jones challenging incumbent Nathan Sanders.

Unchallenged for School Board seats are Bruce Daniel, District 3, Tim Powers, District 2, and Javin Fann, District 4.

Three candidates are seeking Road Commissioner seats including James Hancock, Zone 3, Doyle Duke, Zone 2 and Terry Horn, Zone 1.

It is a primary race for two State and Federal posts.

In the Republican Primary, incumbent state Rep. Mark Pody is unopposed in the 40th District race. In the Democratic Primary, Amelia Morrison Hipps is unopposed as well.

In the Republican Primary for the U.S. House of Representatives, incumbent Diane Black faces opposition from Joe Carr, Tommy Hay and Donald Strong. In the Democratic Primary, there are two candidates David Kent and Flo Matheson.

Remember, all voters must have a state or federally issued photo ID in order to vote.

Tennessee Drivers License with a photo

US Passport

Dept of Safety Photo ID

US Military ID

Gun Permit

Any State or Federally Issued Photo ID

Petitions for Mayor or Alderman of Woodbury and Auburntown are now available. The qualifying deadline will be noon on August 18. The election for these offices is November 8th.
