Funeral services for Jean Barnes, 86 of Cookeville, will be held at 10 am Saturday August 2 at Collegeside Church of Christ with Bro. Joe Roberts officiating. Graveside services and interment will be Saturday at 2pm in the Ivy Bluff Cemetery in Morrison, TN.

The family will receive friends Friday from 4 – 8 pm at the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston & Horner Funeral Home and again Saturday from 9 am until service time at the church.

Mrs. Barnes died Thursday morning, July 31, 2014 at her home.

She was born November 8, 1927 at Ivy Bluff in Cannon County, TN to the late Cyril and Frances (Hartman) Banks. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, LaDarce VanHooser of Ooltewah, TN and Patsy Lane of Old Hickory, TN.

Ms. Barnes was a member of Collegeside Church of Christ. Her church family was very important to her.

She was retired from General Telephone Company of the Southeast with over twenty-five years of service. She was the first female Plant Supervisor in GTE Southeast, and the first female Exchange Manager in Tazewell, VA. She later worked in Dalton, GA and Bluefield, WV before transferring back to Cookeville in 1979.

Ms. Barnes was an avid Atlanta Braves fan. She also liked to dove hunt. At 85 years of age, she had not missed dove hunting on opening day of the season in over 50 years. She loved to garden, freeze and can food and then share that food with friends and family. She often prepared food for shut-ins, and was known for her friendliness, winning smile, and interaction with students. She supported Ronald McDonald House by collecting tabs for several years. Her favorite hobbies were oil painting and making quilts for family members.

Ms. Barnes was a member of the Cookeville Pilot Club and Cookeville Senior Citizens Center, where she served on the board of directors for 16 years.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Lucy of Columbia, TN; two daughters and son-in-law, Jean (B.J.) and Randy Shope of Atlanta, GA, Cindy Setters and fiancée Jack Rick of Cookeville; grandchildren, Clay Barnes and wife Emily of Thompsons Station, TN, Carrie Campbell and husband Sean of Athens, GA, Justin Shope and wife Amy of Auburn, GA, Sean Setters of Cookeville; six precious great-grandchildren, Kate and Evan Barnes, Bethany and Tyler Shope, Charlotte and Grady Campbell; several nieces, great nieces and nephews, cousins; and a host of friends and neighbors.

Pallbearers will be Clay Barnes, Justin Shope, Sean Campbell, Sean Setters, Glyn Gentry, and Jimmy Grimes.

Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cookeville Pilot Club, Mr. and Mrs. Willard Cummings, Mrs. Pat Grimes, Mr. and Mrs. Houston Hefner, Mr. and Mrs. Jack Smith, Mrs. Evelyn Casey, Mrs. Joyce Gentry, Mr. Jim Setters, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Work, Richard Bowman, and her caregivers Vickie, Pat, Kathy, and Becky.
