J. Paul Newby, 84, of McMinnville, died December 13, 2010, at Centennial Medical Center in Nashville following a sudden illness.

He was a native of Warren County and was the son of the late Sam Henderson Newby and Margaret Elizabeth Bertha Newby.

He was self-employed and owned and operated Oak Furniture Sales. A member of the Methodist faith, he was also a former manager of American Life Insurance Company for 21 years and also worked for Gulf States Life Insurance Company.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers G.W. Newby and Clayburn Robertson, and sisters Lowrie Turner, Jim Robinson and Rowena Boyd.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Pauleese and Joe Craft of Sparta; grandson, Patrick Sloan of Nashville; step-son, Tommy Cartwright of Smyrna; neice, Carol (Ricky) Lance of McMinnville; son-in-his heart, Mike Simmons of Woodbury; two brothers, Rudolph Newby of Tullahoma and Randolph and Helen Newby of McMinnville; nieces and nephews, Randy Christine Parks, Kim Trasher, Libby Sohrabi and Steve Newby; several great-nieces and great-nephews. Numerous friends also survive.

Visitation is Thursday, Dec. 16 from 3 to 7 p.m. at High Funeral Home in McMinnville and Friday, Dec. 17 from 11 a.m. until time of service. Funeral services will be in High’s Parlor at 2 p.m. on Friday with Tommy Cartwright officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery.
