The Murfreesboro Central Magnet School 4x800 relay team finished third at the 2017 TSSAA Spring Fling on the MTSU campus.

The Lady Tigers had a commanding lead during the third relay leg, but Emma Harris got injured during the second lap. She did finish the leg before handing it off to CCHS senior Hannah Whited.

By the time, Whited got the baton for the anchor leg, the Lady Tigers had fallen to third. However, Whited tried hard to catch up to the top two teams, state champion Christian Academy of Knoxville and runner up Knoxville Catholic, but Central Magnet had to settle for the bronze medal

As each of the eight participating teams were awarded their medal on the podium, Harris made it back in time to stand and receive her award. Whited helped her off the podium, and said some encouraging words to her.

"We were letting her know it was OK," Whited said. "Running is a very hard sport and unless you run most people would not understand how hard it is. Things happen and I was just encouraging her it's OK and things happen for a reason."

CAK won the 4x800 in a time of 9:34.24, while KC finished runner up with a time of 9:35.01, and MCMS was third in a time of 9:49.90. These times were amazing considering windy conditions.

"It was perfect running weather, except for the wind," Whited said. "The wind was like hitting a brick wall over there, but overall I could not ask for better weather."

Coming into the 2017 TSSAA State Track and Field Meet, this same foursome from MCMS had the top time in the state this season with a time of 9:56.57, and they were looking for payback after losing to CAK on the last lap in 2016. In 2015, they were state champions in the 4x800, and Whited was a member of that team.

"It was upsetting, because we did want to win, and we were going for it," Whited said. "It is about the people you are with and we had fun together and making memories together. At the end of the day, that is what it is all about."

The first two Lady Tiger legs, Abby Graves and Camille Smith jumped out to big lead. In the 4x800, each of the runners goes two laps around the track. On Harris' second lap, she started to slow down, because she was hurt. By the time, Whited got the baton to run the anchor leg, the Lady Tigers had fallen to third. In the meantime, Harris never gave up and finished her relay leg.

Now, Whited's high school career is now over, and it included four trips to the TSSAA state meet as a member of the CCHS cross country team, and four trips to the TSSAA Spring Fling as a member of the MCMS track and field team.

"It has meant so much, and I am blessed to be able to do this," Whited said. "I am blessed to meet some of my best friends, and I have had the best track coach I could have asked for. I am thankful for the experience.
