The Cannon County High School football team had a tall task in front of it on Oct. 14 as it traveled to Sequatchie County.
The Indians came into the game undefeated at 7-0 and hoping to stay in first in the Region standings, while the Lions were trying to break a four-game losing streak. SCHS stayed perfect with a 50-16 win over the Lions.
CCHS was once again the visitor for Homecoming and SCHS took control early in the game and never looked back with a 37-9 lead at the halftime break.
The Lions got their first half points from the legs and feet of Jake Walkup as he ran for a three-yard touchdown scamper, and he also added a booming 48-yard field goal during the first 24 minutes of the game.
His twin, Josh Walkup, had mixed success during the game as quarterback. During the loss, he threw two interceptions, including a pick six. At the same time, he along with wideout Qwentin McMackins made another long-distance connection with 6:35 left in the game from 60 yards out. It was the only points in the second half for the Lions.
The CCHS defense also showed no quit either as it recovered a fumble with only a few seconds left in the game as SCHS was trying to drive for another touchdown.
With the loss, the Lions fall to 2-7, and they are still winless in the Region, while the Indians take over sole possession of the top spot in it after Upperman was upset by Smith County on Friday night.
CCHS losing streak is now at five and it has been outscored 196 to 26 during the same period.
However, the Lions will now get a well-deserved break as the entire Cannon County School System is off next week for fall break. They will be back in action on Oct. 28 for the 2016 season finale on Senior Night at Fred Schwartz Field against hated rival DeKalb County. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
