Last week, marked the end of the football season for the Cannon County High Lions as they lost 42-0 to rival DeKalb County in the final game of the season.

It almost marked the end of the high school football careers for 13 senior players, two cheerleaders and a band member, who had been a part of the best season since 2009 as the team finished up 2-8.

Granted it was only two wins with the Lions defeating the teams they were supposed to beat. They once again went winless in one of the toughest districts in the state. The teammates had to deal with issues both on and off the field, most of which were not of their doing.

Hopefully, when this group of student-athletes get together in the future for events like homecoming, etc., the positives will be better than the negatives, and should focus on what they meant to the program and school.

The good news is most of them will move on to play winter or spring sports, so they have a chance to win more games and leave a enduring legacy.

I had a chance to talk to two senior football players and a senior cheerleader after the pep rally along with CCHS head football coach T.J. Daniel about the this season's legacy and the final Friday Night Lights of their high school career.

"What I am going to miss the most is the fan base," Senior quarterback Josh Walkup said. "It is a great all around fan base, a lot of people come out and watch the games no matter what our record is every year."

Fellow senior running back Jaydon Coon added, "Last game ever in high school, it means a lot to me and my friends. We had a good season, we were really happy. We had been through a lot, and it is pretty special to me."

"I love that we all get to walk down together with the band and the football team," Senior cheerleader Tori Russell said. "I think it is really special, and I am going to miss that the most."

The 2017 senior class included players, Maika Fonoti, Jake and Josh Walkup, Jaydon Coon, Anton Knox, Qwentin McMackins, Jon Micah Davis, Kyle Martinez, Chandler Todd, Jessie Cook, Jacob Lemons, Tristan Wareham, and Bailey Fleming along with cheerleaders Tori Russell, Raquel Novoa and band member Emily Sullivan.

"They brought a lot of guys and athletes, and they tried to help build the program," Coach Daniel said. "The seniors helped out quite a bit this year."
