Mr. Horton Elrod, 79, of the Porterfield Community of Cannon County died March 28, 2010. He was born Sept. 24, 1930.

He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas Montgomery Elrod and Shellie (Sneed) Elrod. He was also preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law that raised him after the death of his parents, Clark & Willie (Hoover) Elrod; also by brothers, Austin Elrod, Rye Elrod, McKeller Elrod, Woodrow Elrod, Burly Elrod, Walter Elrod, Eag Elrod and Howard Elrod; sisters, Jean Brown, Frances Johnson, Madeline Campbell, Minnie Elrod and Elaine Shirley.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Elrod of Porterfield; step-son, John & Vivian Dorris of Milton; step-daughter, Ann & Kerry Stinson of Smyrna; grandchildren, Winston, Rachel and Houston Dorris; sister, Jane Smithson of Milton; niece, Shellie & Donnie Pelham of Bradyville; as well as, several other nieces and nephews.

Mr. Elrod was a member of the Antioch Church of Christ. He worked for the Armour Cheese Plant and for the Stock Barn in years past. He has been a life long farmer breeding and raising horses and cattle. A long time Farm Bureau member and a member of the Tennessee Walking Horse Breeders and Exhibitors Association and was a noted breeder within the Association. He trained and raised the following outstanding horses to show at the Walking Horse Celebration; Sun's Midnight Mark, Go Boy's Cannonball E., Nationwide Pride, Pusher's Misty Star, My Midnight Ann, Go Boy's Splendor and many other fine horses. He enjoyed having his family take part and spend time in the training, breeding and raising of the horses and cattle on his farm.

Visitation will be held Tuesday, March 30, 2010 from 4-8 PM at Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 2 PM in the Smith Funeral Home chapel. Hunter Hay, Dr. Julian Suggs and Marlin Rohrbaugh will officiate and interment will be in Riverside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the American Heart Assoc.
