Farmers Market showcases fresh treats

With the unseasonably weather we have encountered this year, the past few hot humid days have been a reality check. As far as the Market goes, a roof is over our head and it's very comfortable! Unfortunately, the wet conditions and localized flooding has delayed the abundance of green beans, peas and sweet corn. Of course the four legged critters have always gotten their fair share. Harold Duggin was tickled with his row of peas which were loaded. But as he arrived at the patch to harvest his crop, he realized that deer had cleaned the vines.
Some of the highlights of the Market last Saturday was The Blue Porch camel apple muffins, Irene Hollis sweet potato fried pies, jalapeno cornbread and pickled veggies. One can't forget about Mr. Thurman's newly dug fresh sweet potatoes. If you are interested in becoming a producer or need more information concerning the Market, please give Bruce Steelman a call at the Cannon County Extension Office at 563-2554.
For those looking for locally grown farm fresh vegetables, drop by the Cannon County Farmers Market this Saturday, September 7th for a great selection of fruits, vegetables and baked good including; butternut, cucumbers, eggplant, fresh herbs, peppers (Anaheim, bell, banana, Poblano, cayenne, jalapeno, sweet banana), okra, potatoes (Irish new potatoes), squash (zucchini and yellow), sweet corn, tomatoes (red, yellow and green), watermelons, assortment of squash. Irene Hollis and Lindsey Parsley have a great selection of homemade fried pies and assortment of jams, jellies and baked goods. Half Acre Farm offers pesto and organic cucumbers, squash, and bell peppers. Our new vendor is the Blue Porch Restaurant, with a great selection of tasty treats using Cannon County fruits and vegetables in several of their dishes. Their chicken salad is wonderful and who can't resist their pimento spread.
