Eighth grade grid squad honored

Here are the eighth graders from the CCMG football team, who were honored on Sept. 15- Logan Bundy, Cody Baird, Ty Kyne, T.J. Cochran, Conner Tucker, Edward Robertson, Bradley Davis, Blake Bain, Kenneth Mooneyham, Noah Olson and Anthony Bain.

CCMG Football- The Junior Lions finished up the regular season with two losses. On Sept. 15, the Junior Lions honored the eighth graders before the game. However, they fell 28-12 to Jackson County. The final game of the season was Sept. 22 at Watertown with the Junior Lions falling 42-28 to finish winless on the season.

CCMG Football Roster- Logan Bundy, Cody Baird, Nick Phillips, Cordell Howell, Ty Kyne, T.J. Cochran, Conner Tucker, Edward Robertson, Keenan Bain, Cooper Nemeth, Wade Jones, Dalton Dempsey, Jackson Thomas, Dalton Green, Bradley Davis, Blake Band, Kenneth Mooneyham, Noah Olson, Anthony Bain.

However, the junior varsity got in the win column for the first time this season with a come-from-behind two sets to one win over Webb last Wednesday. After winning the second set, 25-17 to stay in the match, the Junior Varsity Lionettes led the entire deciding third set to seal their first win of the season, 15-8.

"Coach (Angela) Hale told us after the first set to just calm down, we got it and we knew we could do it," Madelyn Hale said (no relation).

During the final set, CCHS JV got two aces, including one to win the match by sophomore Madelyn Hale, and one apiece from senior Leah Hyatt, sophomore Alana Whited, and senior Kasey Sadler to clinch the victory.

"It felt amazing, because I have not won a volleyball game in two years," Senior Ashlyn Ellis said. "The first win was amazing."

Head Coach Angela Hale added, "I am really proud of both of our teams, because they have learned to talk to each other a lot better, know where everyone needs to be, and their serves are much improved. I am really proud of our JV girls. Hale has done really well during the last couple of games, so I am really proud of them."

CC Youth Football- Both teams enjoyed mixed success on Sept. 17 at home against Jackson County. The Juniors won for the second time in a row, 47-6, while the seniors dropped their second of three games this season, 13-0.

The Juniors got three touchdowns from Landon Franklin, two from Dustin Keller Jr., and Xavier Odom and Kolby Miller each had one in the victory.

"I am really proud of them, because they came out fighting hard," Juniors head coach Jack Franklin said. "We were just on."

CCHS Golf- The Lions finished the regular season on last week with three matches. On Sept. 12, CCHS lost to hated rival DeKalb County 205 to 179 at Smithville Golf Club. The low score was by Bradly Vickers with a 50.

A day later, the Lions finished third in a tri-match in Macon County against Macon County (145), Westmoreland (196), and CCHS (197). Vickers once again had the low score with a 47.

CCHS finished up the regular season at Green Hills on Sept. 15 against Smith County and they were outshot 189 to 209. Vickers and Luke Jakes tied for the Lions lowest score with a 46.

CCHS Girls Soccer- The Lionettes fell at home on Sept. 20 to Smith County 7-0.

Week of September 26- October 1

CCHS Golf- The Lions finished up the 2016 season with an eighth place finish at the District Tournament at Fall Creek Falls with an overall score of 417. Luke Jakes led CCHS with a 16th place finish after shooting 91 during the event. Bradley Vickers shot a 99, while Chris Young had a 107, Jeffrey Taylor added a 120, and Brandon Schwartz rounded out the scoring with a 157.

CCHS Cross County- The winning ways continued for both the Lions and Lionettes as each of them picked up the overall win at Macon County on Sept. 27. Hannah Whited won the girls race, while Austin Duggin finished fifth in the boys' event. In total seven CCHS runners medaled and eight of them ran personal records.

CCHS Volleyball- The Lionettes finished up the regular season last week by getting swept in three sets to Watertown, Webb and Livingston to remain winless on the season.

During the September 27 home match against Watertown, five players were honored as part of senior night, including Rachel Alexander, Ashlyn Ellis, Leah Hyatt, Kasey Sadler and Alyssa Whited. Three of them Alexander, Ellis and Sadler were also in the running for the 2016 Homecoming Football Queen.

However, the junior varsity team defeated Webb for the second time in two weeks, two sets to one. Lacon Parton led the way by scoring a combined 12 points during the Lionettes wins in set one and set three.

Next week, the Lionettes will host the District Tournament at Robert A. Harris Gym.

CCHS Girls Soccer- Last week, the Lionettes lost to district soccer powerhouses in Merrol Hyde and Central Magnet by a combined 20-nil.

Next week, CCHS will hold senior night on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. at Fred Schwartz Field against Huntland.

CCMG Cross County- The Junior Lions and Lionettes were supposed to travel to Macon County on Sept. 27, but instead they cancelled due to a broken leg by top Junior Lions racer, Tyler Southworth.

However, a couple of days earlier on Sept. 25, the CCMG and Cannon County Elementary School team went to Percy Warner Park in Nashville for the meet.

The Junior Lionettes won their third overall meet in a row with Zettie Elrod leading the way with a third place finish. The Junior Lions also won the boys overall as Southworth led the way with a third place finish.
