The Woodbury Lions Club hosts an American Red Cross Blood Drive six times a year. With the fiscal year beginning 1 July and ending 30 June, the Blood Drives are held the 3rd Thursday, every other month (July, September, November, January, March, and May). May’s blood drive is the last for the year and is designated as the Donor Appreciation Drive.
The Woodbury Lions Club likes to honor Cannon County’s everyday heroes, the ones who “gave their blood” so complete strangers have a chance to live. Cannon County has 334 donors who have given at least one time in the last 3 years and has better participation on a regular drive than any other community blood drive in the state.
With the help of most of the businesses in Woodbury, door prizes are given out to each donor who comes in to donate. Local businesses donate gift cards and certificates, free haircuts, manicures, meals, merchandise, oil changes, free tanning, car detailing, and promotional items. Members of the Woodbury Lions Club receive many items from most businesses because they also want to honor Cannon’s everyday heroes.
In the past several years, each donor who came in to donate, received three, sometimes four items donated from the local businesses. At the end of the blood drive drawings are made for special prizes, including a $100 gift card . Door prizes are drawn for every 30 minutes and one must be present to win. Special prizes at the end of the drive are drawn for and one does not have to be present to win.
One pint of blood could help save three lives. Tennessee is known as the “Volunteer State” and Cannon County is a prime example of why the state has maintained this reputation. The Cannon County blood donors who come out regularly are far more than any other community in the state in comparison with population. The Woodbury Lions Club has 114 members, the second largest in the state, made up of volunteers who serve their community, state, country, and world.
Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 9 AM until 6 PM at the Woodbury Lions Memorial Building is the annual Donor Appreciation Blood Drive. Come out and be a hero, donate.
