DeKalb County proved too much for Cannon County, claiming a 42-0 win, in the battle of District 8-AA rivals at Schwartz Field Friday night.

The Tigers, ranked No. 10 in the first Class AAAA football poll, pulled away in the waning minutes of the first quarter. DeKalb County (3-0) led 7-0 late in the first quarter but scored two touchdowns in the final 2:16 of the frame to vault to a 21-0 lead.

"We hung in there in the first quarter and were able to get a couple stops and give ourselves a chance early, but we couldn't sustain that," Cannon County Head Coach Brent Bush said. "DeKalb County has demonstrated a strong defense at the start of the season and they were very good again tonight."

Cannon County (0-3) had negative 50 yards total offense and was shutout for the first time this season against a swarming DeKalb County defense. Cannon County ran 40 plays and 19 netted zero yards or less as the Tigers registered their third consecutive shutout.

The Tigers accumulated 344 yards total offense and scored all 42 points prior to halftime. Quarterback Lucas Phillips completed 5-of-11 passes for 151 yards. Four of his five completions went for touchdowns. DaVontae Milan led DeKalb County with 125 yards on just nine carries, including a 51-yard touchdown run. Milan was injured and left the game on a stretcher for precautionary purposes.

Complete results of Cannon County's game against DeKalb County will be available in the Sept. 5 edition of The Cannon Courier.
