A potential problem is looming for Cannon County's solid waste operation.

The county's current contract with Pemberton Trucking to haul the county's solid waste from the Cannon County Convenience Center on Alexander Drive to Middle Point Landfill in Rutherford County ends on Sept. 1.

The county placed advertisements in both the Cannon Courier and out-of-county newspapers in an effort to solicit proposals to do the hauling.

Mike Gannon, the current county executive, sent notification to the Cannon County Board of Commissioners at their Aug. 16 meeting that no proposals had been submitted.

The deadline to submit proposals was at 10 a.m. that day. Gannon said no one had even called to inquire about the opportunity.

Gannon's last day in office is Aug. 31. The county executive has oversight of solid waste.

Pemberton Trucking did not submit a proposal to continue hauling after Sept. 1.

Roger Parker of Pemberton Trucking said it is not surprising the county received no proposals to do the hauling in that few businesses in Cannon or surrounding counties have the trucks and manpower necessary to perform the service.

Parker said Pemberton Trucking would give consideration to continue hauling solid waste to the landfill past Sept. 1.

"When the county commission asked us to extend our contract for six months earlier this year we stepped up to the plate and delivered," Parker said. "We feel we have always gone above and beyond what our contract has called for and have provided good service to the citizens of Cannon County.

"We appreciate that the county has placed its trust in us for so many years. We believe we have provided a good service at a fair price. We think it has been a win-win situation. We are making plans to move on to other opportunities but we will give consideration to extending our service if we are contacted," Parker added.
