A Cannon County commissioner is facing an allegation of harassment.

Corey Davenport, who represents the Second District, was booked at the Cannon County Jail on Sunday.

His initial court appearance has been set for Jan. 8 in Cannon County General Sessions Court.

Rick Shaner, an unsuccessful candidate for a Third District commission seat earlier this year, took out an affidavit of complaint against Davenport on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Shaner alleges in the complaint, filed with Judicial Commission Jerry R. Barrett, that "Corey Davenport over the last 6 months has text'd me a dozzen (approx) times after being told multiple times to not contact me on my home (cell) number."

According to information posted by a victim notification app which was received from the jail, Davenport was charged with harassment.

An individual can obtain an affidavit of complaint against another person through a judicial commissioner.

A complaint affidavit is a sworn statement prepared by someone who wishes to file a legal complaint. Such statements are filed when people wish to file suit against someone for a violation of civil law and they can also be involved in criminal cases, when a victim files a formal complaint with the assistance of law enforcement.

It is not yet known if law enforcement has investigated the alleged charge.

The complaint affidavit becomes the basis for a case, providing basic information about the facts of the matter and outlining the nature of the case. This document is part of the court record maintained on the case and can be inspected by anyone reviewing the record.

Davenport became a commissioner for the Second District in September of this year after he was elected in the August General Election.

Prior to that he has held positions with the Cannon County Industrial Development Board, the Cannon County Election Commission and the Cannon County Republican Party.

Davenport is married to Cannon County Clerk and Master Dana Davenport.

In the past, Davenport has been a vocal critic both at public meetings and on social media of local government and the news media. He has also been an active participant and contributor to a local conservative-leaning news blog.

Shaner also operates an online blog on which he posts articles and comments about Cannon County Government and county officials, some of which can be viewed as critical in nature.

Davenport was released following the booking. He was not required to post a bond.
