New Cannon County Executive Brent Bush has spent his first day in office Saturday dealing with an issue that his predecessor, Mike Gannon, was plagued by on his final day -- a broken compactor at the Cannon County Convenience Center.

The compactor has been broken for much of the past week and it is difficult to find replacement parts for the nearly 40-year-old piece of equipment.

Because of the problem, and the difficulty in getting work done over a holiday weekend, the convenience center will be closed until Tuesday.

Bush said he met with Roger Parker of Pemberton Trucking this morning to discuss the problems and how to address them. Pemberton Trucking has been hauling solid waste from the convenience center to a landfill in Murfreesboro.

"We will work tomorrow (Sunday) and will work to resolve this issue over the weekend," Bush said, adding the problem is "multiple and complex."

The county will soon be spending close to $200,000, most of it received through state grants, to make upgrades and improvements to the convenience center.

"Hopefully we will have the facility reopened by noon on Tuesday," Bush said, adding persons needing additional information can reach him at 423-736-2212.
