To the citizens of Cannon County:

I wish to clarify the press release made by the Director of Reach, and correct some inaccuracies. After the January 16, 2010 Commissioners Meeting, I was not called, nor invited to a meeting. I waited until January 29, 2010 (2 weeks after the meeting) to see if I would receive the salary of the Reach Director as I requested in the meeting.

When I didn’t, I called the Executive’s office to get a copy and ran down there and picked it up from Diane Hickman. I then took it home to review, then went back to the Executive’s office to ask my questions on February 5, 2010.

I told Executive Mike Gannon I would like to get some of my questions answered by the Director of Reach. He said, “he hasn’t been able to get a hold of her, but would call me when he did and set up a meeting.” On Monday February 8, 2010, I got a phone call from Executive Mike Gannon, stating if I wanted to speak to the Director of Reach that she would be there another 5-10 minutes. I went down there and closed my shop on one of my busiest weeks.

When I walked up the door was closed and I knocked and went in. Attending the meeting was Executive Mike Gannon, Secretary Diane Hickman, Director Angela King, and Assistant Director of Reach Linda Bedwell. I set down and began to ask questions.

You can listen to the meeting, I have provided the recording of this meeting. You can listen to this on cannoncourier.com (see link below), cannonwire.com, or wbry.com. I did this #1 to be able to review later, and #2 to protect myself.

I never once was asked by the Director, nor the Executive, if I was satisfied. I never once stated that I understood or was satisfied, as quoted in the press release. With that being said, I was highly upset that someone would put my name with a statement without stating the truth.

I was elected by the people to do my very best. I am trying to do the best for the county and my district, and that is asking questions and being kept informed. Thanks for taking the time to read and listen to me. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at rebekahparton@gmail.com or contact me by phone.

Your District 4 Commissioner,
Rebekah Parton

This situation of dueling press releases reaffirms the position of The Cannon Courier that a special session of the Cannon County Commission needs to be called so that all questions pertaining to the REACH budget and funding can be addressed, on the record, in a public forum.

Maybe by then we all can come together and get the answers that the public needs to know.. Lets all try to get along.
