Charles Arthur Smithson



Mr. Charles Arthur Smithson, 75, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2013 after an extended illness.  He was born September 14, 1937 and was the son of the late Thomas Leon Smithson and Christine Gaither Ash and the grandson of the late Charlie T. Smithson and Thursey Logan Smithson.

He was a retired Senior Master Sergeant with the United States Air Force, after serving 20 years.  He was stationed at the Pentagon in Washington, DC where he worked for the Department of Defense and served at Sewart Air Force Base  in Smyrna, TN until its closing in 1970.  He retired in 1974 as Base Sergeant Major at Little Rock Air Force Base, Jacksonville, Arkansas.  He was also a retired truck driver with Roadway Express.

Mr. Smithson was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, and a member of the Mt. Moriah Lodge #18 of Murfreesboro, TN.,  a member of the American Legion Post 0279, and the VFW Post 5064, and a member of the Air Force Sergeants Association.  He was a member of the Pleasant View Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald R. Smithson.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Ellen King Smithson, Son, Charles Gregory Smithson, daughter, Charlene Smithson Odom and her husband David, grandchildren Gretchen Odom Paschal and Jonathan David Odom, Great granddaughter, Alana Nicole Paschal all of Woodbury.  He is also survived by 3 brothers, Jerry Smithson, Drennan Smithson (Faye), of Woodbury and Thomas Leon Smithson, Jr. of Alexandria.  2 Sisters, Amelia (Amy) Henderson and Linda Faye Haley both of Woodbury and Sister-in-law, Cheryl Johnson and her husband, Ronnie of Readyville, Tn.

Visitation with the family will be Monday, 4-8 PM at Woodbury Funeral Home, and funeral services will be 2 PM Tuesday at the Chapel of Woodbury Funeral Home, with Bro. Michael L. Lorance and Bro. Tony Burnett officiating.  Burial will be in Riverside Gardens with full military honors.
