The Cannon County sports teams had a light week, because of a couple of postponements. The season really gets going next week. However, the teams in action had a successful week, including a volleyball team, which broke a long losing streak in its season opener.

The Lionettes opened the 2015 regular season with a trimatch at Warren County against the host and Franklin County on Aug. 17. CCHS lost in two sets to the Lady Pioneers (17-25, 9-25). Emily Sissom had three aces, while Madelynne Bogle and Haylee Mooneyham added three kills apiece in the loss. The team added five digs.

In the second match of the evening, the Lionettes picked up their first victory in a long time over Franklin County (26-24, 25-23).
In the first set, FCHS had a chance to win it as they were up 24-22, but CCHS scored four consecutive points to win the opening set. In the second set, the Lionettes wanted to finish it off early as they scored the first 10 points of it. However, the Lady Rebels fought back to make it 11-9. CCHS had a chance to end the match up 24-17, but FCHS cut it down to 24-23. However, the Lionettes scored the final point to pick up the win and end a long losing streak.
Sissom had four aces, while Bogle had five kills. The team added 13 digs, including one by Dasia Coon, who head coach Linda Cook said it changed the tone of the match.

"She literally dove to the floor with arms extended to keep the ball in play for CCHS to win the point," Cook said.

CCHS fell at Smith County in straight sets, (17-25, 12-25, 10-25), to drop to 1-2 on the young season on Aug. 20. Katie Hoskins and Sissom each scored aces in the defeat. The CCHS JV team also lost to Smith County, two sets to one (25-22, 9-25, 1-15), on the same evening.
The JV Lionettes only had three returning players from last season, Alyssa Whited, Catherine Shaw and Courtney Talley and several other players played key roles in the match, including Rachel Alexander, Kasey Sadler, Ashlyn Ellis, Taylor Sturgill and Addison Higgins.
This week, the Lionettes have three key District 8AA matches, including the home opener, which took place on Aug. 24 against Murfreesboro Central Magnet. The following day, CCHS hosted Livingston, and it travels to Upperman on Aug. 27 at 5 p.m.

CCMS football
The Junior Lions have been off since a 16-0 loss to Mt. Juliet Christian on Aug. 11, which dropped them to 0-3 on the season. However, CCMS hosts hated rival DeKalb County at the CCHS football stadium on Thursday looking for their first win of the season.

Each of the three age divisions had their preseason game on Aug. 22 at Watertown against Baxter. Each of the games were cut down to two quarters, 10 minutes apiece with a running clock.

The Pee Wee (5-7 year old) team fell to Baxter 14-7, while the Juniors (8-9 year old) won 13-8, and the Seniors (10-12 year old) also won 6-0.
"It was a solid effort by the entire team, and everybody contributed equally today," CCYFB league president Ed Phillips said after the games.
The regular season starts for all three age divisions on Saturday as they head back to Watertown. This time they will face the host starting at 10 am with the Pee Wee game. The two other divisions will follow at the same location.
"Everybody is extremely excited, and the boys played great," Phillips said. "I think we are going to compete very well in our league this season, and we are ready for the first game."

CCHS golf
The Lions played in a tri-match on Aug. 18 at Smithville Golf Club against Upperman and Gordonsville, and they finished second with a final score of 189. Briar Jakes led the way with a nine-hole total score of 44, while Hunter Vickers (47), Bradly Vickers (49) and Austin Martin (49) finished out the scoring for CCHS. Upperman won the tri-match with an overall score of 171, while Gordonville had a 258.
The second match of the week against DeKalb County at River Watch on Aug. 20 was rained out, and CCHS only has one match this week against Gordonsville on Tuesday at Smithville Golf Club with a 3:30 p.m. tee-off.
CCHS girls' soccer
The Lionettes were supposed to open up the 2015 regular season at the CCHS football stadium against Marshall County on Aug. 20. However, the match was postponed, because of a lack of match officials, according to CCHS head coach Dorinda Walker. Currently, the Lionettes are working on a make-up date for it.
This week, the Lionettes traveled to Smith County on Tuesday in their only match of the week.
CCHS Cross-Country
The Lions and Lionettes have been hard at work since their preseason meet at Cookeville on Aug. 13, but the regular season begins on Saturday morning with the Voyles Classic at Sharp Springs Park in Smyrna with the horn going off at 8:30 am.
