Car fires under investigation

The Cannon County Sheriff's Department is investigating two recent vehicle fires.

The first occurred on June 10, when Deputy Brayde Baker responded to Big Hill Road for a car fire in the roadway.

Upon arrival the fire department said there was no one around the vehicle and that it was still running when they arrived to extinguish the flames.

After the fire was put out the vehicle, a 2009 Nissan Altima, was a total loss.

Deputy Baker recovered a VIN from the vehicle. The vehicle came back as being reported as stolen from Cookeville. Deputy Baker contacted Cookeville Police about the recovery of the vehicle.

On June 11, Deputy Baker responded to the 3000 block of Hollow Springs Road for a vehicle that was flipped over and on fire.

Upon arrival he made contact with the fire fighters as they were extinguishing the flames.

They stated that there was no one with or inside the vehicle.

Mathew Smith and Jade Smith reported the fire. Mr. Smith stated his wife was walking the dog and saw the flames and called 911. The incident is under further investigation.

The vehicle, a 2004 Honda, was a total loss, the report states.
