All Cannon County athletic teams are in the middle of their fall seasons with mixed success during the first week of September.
CCHS Cross Country

Both the Lions and Lionettes had two important meets this week against some of the best competition in the Middle Tennessee area. On Sept. 1, they traveled to Warren County and both teams came away with overall team wins in the boys' and girls' division. Hannah Whited won the girls' race, while Austin Duggin finished second in the boys race.

"It was really good for us to pull out that win," Duggin said after the Sept. 5 meet.
Whited added, "We had been practicing really hard and doing yoga. We just worked together, and we knew if we just ran our paces that race, we could come in first and we did that."

A few days later, both teams ran at Murfreesboro Riverdale on Sept. 5 in their final meet before the Labor Day holiday. The Lionettes finished 6th overall out of 10 teams, including against some top Class AAA competition. Whited (21:38.51) was eighth overall while the Lions were ninth overall out of 15 teams led by Duggin (19:32.48), who finished 39th overall.

CCHS Girls Soccer
The Lionettes faced Class AAA foe White County on Sept. 1 in their 2015 home opener. It was a back-and-forth game, but CCHS senior striker Livia Walker scored her third goal of the game to even the score at 3-3 in the 60th minute of the game.
The Lady Warriors had a chance to win it late, but the Lionettes defense held tough to preserve the 3-3 tie for their first positive result of the season.
"The defense did awesome, because the ball was on our side more than half the time," CCHS junior goalkeeper Raquel Novoa said. "They always kept it away and I could not stop goals from happening without our defense."
Senior defender Bailey Sims added, "I am super satisfied considering it was our first home game of the season, and we worked well as a team."
The Lionettes fell to district foe Merrol Hyde 10-0 on Sept. 3. Next week the Lionettes travel to Watertown on Sept. 8 and host Sewanee St. Andrews two days later at 5 p.m.

CCHS Golf
The Lions competed in a tri-match against DeKalb County and Jackson County on Sept. 1 at the Smithville Country Club. They finished second totaling a nine-hole score of 189 with DCHS winning with a final score of 162.
CCHS was led by Hunter Vickers with a 43, while Briar Jakes carded a 45, Austin Martin added a 48, and Chris Young completed the scoring with a 53.
The Lions are back in action Sept. 8 against DeKalb County in Smithville, and they travel to Smith County on Sept. 10.
CCHS Volleyball
The Lionettes showed improvement during three key home matches last week, even though they were all three losses. They fell to Warren County (3-1), Smith County (3-1) and Macon County (3-0).
Next week, CCHS heads to Livingston Academy for a 5 p.m. first serve on Sept. 10.

CCJL Cross County
The Junior Lions and Lionettes were also at Murfreesboro Riverdale on Sept. 5 as they took part in the same meet as their high school counterparts.
The CCJL boys' team finished 10th overall out of 17 teams led by Duncan Cook (14:03.22), who finished in 22nd, while the CCJL girls' squad was 6th out of 16 teams, including a team best 17th by Zettie Elrod (15:43.17).
This week the Junior Lions have meets on Sept. 10 in Fairview and Sept. 12 in Milton.

CC Youth Football
The Lions opened up the 2015 season at Watertown on Aug. 31 with all three divisions losing their respective games: Pee-Wee (33-6); Junior (28-0) and Senior (34-0).
Last week, the Lions hosted Baxter in their home opener at Fred Schwartz Field with mixed results. The Pee-Wee lost in a heartbreaker 7-6.
Landon Franklin scored the only points for Cannon with an 85-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.
Both the Junior (25-18) and Senior Lions (18-7) picked up wins over the Rebels in thrilling fashion with several great performances from many players.
In the Junior Lions win, Theo Winters rushed for over 227 yards and five touchdowns, and Isaiah Bogle made a game saving stop with less than 10 seconds left to preserve the victory.
"Our coach told us to keep going and not stop," Bogle said of the defensive stand to win the game.
Winters added about the Lions win and his performance on Sept. 5, "It was pretty good."
The Senior Lions picked up their first win of the season in dominate fashion holding the Rebels to a late touchdown, including an interception by Garrett Basham and one score apiece by Joshua Jernigan, Tucker Kyne and Dustin Jones.
"It was really good, because we were doing teamwork and blocking," Jernigan said after the win.
This week, the team heads to Jackson County starting at 10:00 a.m. with the Pee-Wee game, and the other two divisions playing at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m.
