American Legion Post 279 is sending three boys and three girls to the 2013 Boys/Girls State. Normally, only one boy and one girl go to Boys/Girls State each year, from each High School. Mr. Freddy Curtis the Boys State Coordinator at CCHS asked if we could send more than one boy.

Charlie Harrell, Director for the American Legion Post 279 Boys State Program, coordinated with the Tennessee Department Headquarters and got approval for three boys and three girls. To send three boys and three girls to this program, requires the support of Sponsors from our local business owners, civic organizations, and local professional people. For 2013 our Sponsors are:

For Boys State - Dr. Jeff Todd, Woodbury Medical Clinic doctors Tommy and Diana Woodson, Woodson's Pharmacy; Bobby Ferrell, Past Commander, American Legion Post 279.

For Girls State - Judge Susan Melton, Atty, Melton Law Office; American Legion Post 279; Post 279 Auxiliary Unit 279. Dr. Jeff Todd and Judge Susan Melton attended Boys and Girls State when they were in High School. A great big thank you goes to our sponsors for 2013, and we hope that you will partner with us again for 2014 and beyond. This is a great opportunity for our young men and women who will be our Leaders of Tomorrow.

The attendees had to write a one page letter on "Why I want to attend Boys/Girls State. They had to attend an American Legion Post 279 meeting with their parents, where they read their one page essay and enjoyed dinner and the special meeting honoring our attendees for 2013.

When they return from Boys/Girls State they will be required to write thank you letters to the American Legion Post 279 and to their designated Sponsor. They will attend an honors ceremony in October where they receive Certificates of Appreciation and Special Trophies, following a dinner for them and there parents. The attendees will also have to brief the Junior Class when school starts in the fall, about their experiences at Boys/Girls State.

The Cannon County High School Boys/Girls State Coordinators, Mr. Freddy Curtis and Mrs. Lisa Choate, will also receive Certificates for Meritorious Service and Special Trophies for their truly outstanding services to this great program. Our Sponsors will attend the Special Honors Ceremony and also receive Certificates of Appreciation and special plaques honoring their service to our young men and women of Cannon County High School, Woodbury, and Cannon County. God bless you all, and God bless this great country.
