Research for creation of a book highlighting the history of the Auburntown community is currently underway, according to Mary Hughes, president of the Auburntown Historical Society, the all-volunteer organization heading up the project.

“We’re having great response from people wanting to help with this project in any way they can,” Hughes said. “Many feel such a book is long overdue, and they are excited to know the book is being compiled.”

Hughes said that the Auburntown Historical Society has received numerous contributions, such as photos, copies of grants, military records, family stories and other materials.

“These are the types of items that will help us in telling the history of our community and the surrounding area in an interesting manner,” Hughes added.

Hughes, who was born and raised in the community and now makes her home in the Short Mountain area of DeKalb County, said the publication is being designed to appeal to anyone with connections to the Auburntown community of Cannon County.

“We welcome all who have ties with the community to participate in this project,” she said. “We are seeking information on early settlers, churches, schools, businesses, social events, military activities of those from the community and other interesting aspects of our history.”

The Auburntown Historical Society meets monthly from January through October at the Fellowship Hall of the Auburntown Church of Christ. The public is invited and encouraged to attend these meetings.
