Arts Center Presents 'The Decapitalization Circus' Feb. 24
The Arts Center of Cannon County is proud to present the award-winning Bread & Puppet Theater, featuring Artistic Director Peter Schumann and his troupe of Vermont performers bringing their signature powerful imagery, masked characters, and giant papier-mâché’ puppets. Although all Bread and Puppet events have a seriousness of purpose – a few laughs are always thrown in.

The Bread & Puppet Theater is one of the oldest non-profit, self-supporting theatrical companies in the U.S.  The theater has been enacting its radical utopian vision in cardboard and cloth for over forty years, from the spectacle of its larger-than-life puppets at Vietnam War protests in New York City to the pageantry of its long-running (over 25 years) annual event, "Our Domestic Resurrection Circus" in Glover, Vermont.

The latter event regularly attracted audiences in the tens of thousands up to the late 1990's. Author and NPR commentator Andrei Codrescu has praised "the Bread & Puppet Theater has been so long a part of America's conscious struggle for our better selves that it has become, paradoxically, a fixture of our subconscious."

The family-friendly "Decapitalization Circus" demonstrates in numerous death-defying stunts the fantastic effects of the capitalization of life in the U.S. and citizens' courageous efforts of decapitalization.

The performers represent the whole scale of the social spectrum from benign billionairism to despicable homeless anti-social-elementarianism.  All the acts are FDA and FBI certified displays of patriotic correctness and defy all imaginable forms of terrorism.

The Possibilitarians, a multi-instrumental variety ensemble, provide the appropriate-inappropriate sounds for the Circus. Take note that some of the circus acts are politically puzzling to adults, but accompanying kids can usually explain them.  The audience is welcome to examine all the masks and puppets after the performance.
