Now On Display in Cannon Hall
The Art of Thomas Brodhead

Exhibit Opening February 11th, 6:00-7:30pm

The colorful paintings of artist Thomas Brodhead, a resident of Smyrna,
TN, will be on display at the Art Center of Cannon County from February
1st through the beginning of March. Brodhead's early work depicts
humorous narratives, typically in a pop-art cartoonish style, but his
current subject matter is rendered with a technique viewers may find
fascinating. "I'm creating figures composed of small geometric areas,
each painted in a distinct, contrasting color," Brodhead said in a
recent interview. "I took a cue from American painter Stuart Davis, who
used fixed colors to paint large, intertwining areas. But I'm also a fan
of the German color theorist Albert Munsell, who discovered a way to
measure color intensity in order to achieve color balance. My work now
embraces both Davis and Munsell, building up large areas with aggregates
of small, single-colored polygons."

Brodhead's recent work is striking in detail, something ported over from
his previous work setting classical sheet music. "For over twenty years
I worked as a music engraver and editor, setting difficult music for
print publication. The attention to detail in that work eventually found
its way into my paintings. At first I explored painting to bathe in
color after living in a world of black-and-white notation. My earlier,
cartoonish work was a reaction against that, but my current work
reflects my prior preoccupation with detail. Old habits die hard, you
might say."

A graduate of Oberlin College (1989), Brodhead has distinguished himself
as a musicologist, and he is the editor of the new performance edition
of Charles Ives's massive Fourth Symphony. His work as a painter first
landed him a solo show at Vanderbilt's K.C. Potter Center in 2014, and
his painting, "Harlequin Donnybrook," was accepted into the 2015 juried
Open Show at the Oak Ridge Art Center in Oak Ridge, TN. "Harlequin
Donnybrook" and several of his recent large canvases will comprise his
show at the Arts Center of Cannon County. Brodhead's art may be viewed
