Graveside services for Mrs. Lillian Smith "Muddy" Wallace, 103, were set for Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at Riverside Cemetery with Bro. Tim Gentry officiating.

Mrs. Wallace died Thursday, July 2 in Hoover, AL following an extended illness. A native of Cannon County, Mrs. Wallace was the daughter of the late Mack and Mattie Higgins.

For many years "Mrs. Mattie" owned and operated the Higgins House at the corner of East Main and McCrary Streets. It was the home for tourists, peddlers and local tenants until it closed in the 1980's.

Mrs. Wallace and her late husband, Hayden Smith, were owners of the Cannon Courier from the 1933 until 1950. After Mr. Smith's death in 1951. Mrs. Lillian, a member of the Church of Christ, later married well known Church of Christ Minister G.K. Wallace, who died in 1988.

For several years "Muddy" as she was so well known, made her home in Florida and later in Hoover, Alabama with her daughter. She remained active and visited her former home in Woodbury on many occasions. If you talked with Mrs. Wallace, you quickly saw wit, charm and a keen memory of her childhood days in Cannon County which she always liked to talk about with anyone she met.

In 2006 the Woodbury Lions Club honored Mrs. Wallace as part of their 70th Anniversary celebration. Her former husband Hayden was a Charter Member and first President of the club when it was organized in 1936.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Nancy Griner of Hoover, AL and Mrs. Sally Ann Smith of Riverview, FL; grandchildren Cindy (Jeff) Lawrence and Molly (Russ) Stringer; all of Hoover, AL; Hayden (Wendy) Smith of Riverview, FL and Beverly (Al) Fisch of St. Petersburg, FL; stepson Jim (Taffy) Wallace of Fayette, MO; seven great grandchildren; four great great grandchildren.

Visitation with the family will be Tuesday, July 7 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. with graveside services following with Smith Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Serving as pallbearers were: nephews Andy Bryson and Hayden Bryson, Charles Sain Jim Stone, Joe Hawkins, Austin Jennings.

The family requested memorial donations be made to Lillian and G.K. Wallace Scholarship or Billy Smith Preaching Scholarship both at Freed-Hardeman University in Henderson, TN. Contact Smith Funeral Home for further information.
